Official permit given by the government is compulsory. All adveturers should apply latest 30-40 days prior to the tour.
Special note: Due to the harsh winter conditions and unexpected local official decisions,we have the right to change the route, camp altitudes and service detail. Skitouring is not a local culture and guiding quality is mostly weak in the region. All experienced ski mountaineers should accept that, mostly we do provide expert climbing guides with low skitouring abilities.
DETAILED TRIP ITINERARY / Mount Ararat Ski
Day 1: Welcome at Van Airport, Transfer to Dogubeyazit, Overnight at hotel
Welcome at Van Ferit Melen Airport, transfer to border town Dogubeyazit which takes approximately 3hrs. Heading towards Dogubeyazit, we take a short break at the “Muradiye waterfalls” for some Turkish tea and the outstanding scenery. After we check in our hotel, we have our lunch in a local restaurant in city center. We then visit monumental Ishak Pasha Palace, a 17th century Ottoman gem, whilst watching the dramatic sunset sky. If time permits we will visit local handcrafts store to see and art demonstration Having collected our climbing permits from the military and gear check at the hotel, Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Day 2: Mount Ararat Ski Ascent :Transfer to Mount Ararat, Ski up to 1st Camp
After breakfast at the hotel, we transfer for Mount Ararat Ski by minibus which takes 1,5 hrs approximately. We drive to former Eli village region at 2200m / 7250 ft. In winter, the vehicles may not drive to this point and we may start skiing at 1500-1700 meters. After we give our loads to our porters, starting from this point and we will ski up until we arrive first camp. Depending on the weather conditions, the 1st camp site will be at 2700-3000m altitudes.
Day 3: Mount Ararat Ski Ascent: Acclimatization day. Overnight at 1st Camp
We will try to ski up to the 2nd camp we use in summer, at 4200 meters and will ski down to the 1st camp for acclimatization. This enables us to “climb high and sleep low” – an important step in acclimatization which is very important for a successful Mount Ararat Ski experience.
Day 4: Mount Ararat Ski Ascent: Move to 2nd camp
We ski up from the south ridge up to the 2nd camp at 3700-3900 meters. After reaching the campsite, we set up our tents and take some rest. Before dinner and overnight at this campsite, we will ski up for an extra acclimatisation or just spend the afternoon with easy walks.
Attention: Please keep in mind that, Mules Support is not available and Porter support is very limited to this campsite. Especially when the weather conditions are harsh, we leave most of the luggage in the basecamp and each climber carry their own personal climbing equipment.
Day 5: Mount Ararat Ski Ascent: Summit day. Overnight at 1st Camp.
We wake up at 3:30 and have our breakfast. We start the summit ski ascent at 4:30. Crossing the upper snow covered slopes; we reach 4750-4950m altitude where we put our crampons on for the summit glacier. We finally reach the summit of at 5137m / 16854ft after 5-8 hrs skitouring performance. We ski down to the 1st camp to spend the night and refresh ourselves. We will provide lunch packs before the start of the Mount Ararat Ski ascent aiming for the summit.
Day 6: Return back to Dogubeyazit and drive to VAN city.
We start our ski descend until Eli village region at 2200 meters. The minibus meets us at the village road and drive towards Dogubeyazit town. After having lunch in a local restaurant in city center, we drive to VAN city with 2,5 hours drive of 180 km. Free time at leisure if time permits.
Day 7: Transfer to Van airport, end of services for Mount Ararat Ski Expedition
After early morning breakfast, we drive to Van airport for the flights to Istanbul or we continue with extension tours in Eastern Anatolia region.
